In the 1960s, ballerinas could still get into television--just barely. Catwoman and Batgirl had both been dancers before they were hired for Batman. It was a step down from the Ziegfried Follies, but Julie Newmar, the original Catwoman, was convincing in black and white and in colour. And I'm pretty sure I was whipped, even without having been sprayed with the catomizer. Or taking a ride in the Catillac. It turns out meow-meowing works on any sort of flack catcher. Yvonne Craig, who played Batgirl, apparently found her Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo dance background useful when toppling villains with her kung fu kicks. She also danced painted emerald green in a psychedelic leotard in Star Trek. Her motorcycle didn't require so much flexibility, or finesse, but she was the prettiest biker chick I had ever seen. When fans talk about Batman and Robin, they sometimes say, regretfully, "Those guys never acted again". Those who thought the show was corny...
