Today is one of those days that could be described as 100 degrees in the shade. Even the birds are taking a breather. They were singing as the sun was rising, but now, at noon, at the height of the day, they have largely fallen silent. Still, the Snowbirds flew over the Peace Tower, showing even this thick air is still alive. Not so long ago today would have been called Dominion Day, but now it's Canada Day--apparently we repatriated our constitution (Trudeau pirouetted behind the Queen again) and swapped Magna Carta for a Canadian Charter of Rights. With all of that song and dance behind us, it's just another Canada Day. The only question left to answer is will I wear red when le ciel est bleu(, l'enfer est rouge).

Give us this Day is the online creative journal of Kurtis Kitagawa, PhD (Edinburgh), MPhil (Oxford), MA (Chicago), BA First Class Honours (Calgary), who, withal, considers himself a student of history. Check daily for freshly composed essays and offbeat creative writing inspired by a life spent in universities, government, and business. Job offers gratefully accepted. Alternative facts welcome, and will not be burned. Nor will their ashes be used as eye shadow!
