Even in a city it is possible to observe certain first fruits. So it is with the wild grape that is set to replace expired lilacs in a lot vacant except for above ground hydro wires. Migrants from the Middle East prefer the leaves from this plant to the rubbery ones that come in a Krinos jar when they make their stuffed savories. Fronds and tendrils entwine the wild grape to chain link fences, the better to support the weight of the grapes. But the wild grape also take strength from girding up the fruit of its own loins. Crows stand sentinel on the tops of lamp posts, their eyes peeled for road kill, or, wild grapes in a pinch.
